The Backcountry Gurgler
The Backcountry Gurgler is a fantastic fly pattern, especially for targeting species like tarpon, snook, redfish, and various bass species. Fishing the Backcountry Gurgler can be incredibly effective, especially for topwater action. The Gurgler is particularly effective in shallow flats, backwaters, and around mangroves where fish are hunting for prey.
Cast the Gurgler out and let it sit for a moment. Then, give it a sharp strip to create a popping sound and a splash. Pause for a few seconds before repeating. This mimics a struggling baitfish and can trigger aggressive strikes. Or slowly retrieve the fly with gentle twitches. This creates a subtle wake on the water’s surface, which can be very enticing to fish, especially in calm conditions. And finally, in choppy water or when fish are actively feeding, a faster retrieve with continuous pops can be more effective. This creates more noise and disturbance, drawing fish from a distance.
